Soggy June, Hello July

Yes we had a wetter than average June my friends and by a pretty soggy margin. I measured 3.63 inches of the drippy stuff compared to the more typical 2.47 inches in June. Full disclosure there were a few systems that came through and dropped large amounts of rain and other areas around the metro may have had more or less. But the sun was certainly not in abundance last month. June is not typically a sunny month anyhow. The curse of the Rose Festival Low tends to wreck half the month. This year it was more or less around all month long.

The temps were about spot on average for June with slightly warmer overnight values. These higher lows came largely due to an abundance of cloudy nights. The warmest day was a toasty 90.4° on the 23rd, the only time I saw a ninety in June, and only the second such mark all year. It was also a daily record high for the date. The coolest daytime high was a early spring like, 57.2° on the 5th. Overnight the warmest was 61.9° on the 23rd which led to that lone 90 plus later that day, and was one of 6 days with overnight lows in the 60s. The chilliest temp came on the 1st with a 49.3° reading one of two nights that couldn't stay above 50. June gave us 16 days with temps above 70° five of which were above 80° including the lone 90.

June managed to stay mostly cloudy with just 5 sunny days all month. 10 days featured rain the heaviest of which occurred on the 7th when 1.13 inches fell one of two days with more than 1/2 inch. There were 6 days with more than 1/4 inch of rain. Over all June was definitely a lot more spring than summer and that is typically the case with June.

July is starting off a bit like June ended, but even if we have a sub-par summer, July and August will have abundant sunshine and gorgeous warm days lie ahead.

What a great start to June.

We have had a bit of cloudiness from about 8am till noon every day this first week of June. We have been blessed with fantastic sunshine and 70s all week though. This is heavenly weather. The forecast from the gang at the NWS Portland are suggesting more of the same for the next few days. Later in the coming week we may see some showers but pleasant all around.  Amen and soak it up my friends, soak it up :)

Sensational Spring Weather Continues

It just keeps coming... more and more spring sunshine. I took a drive out to Yacolt today under mostly sunny skies and temps in the mid 60s. The East Fork of the Lewis River is flowing quite nicely. I pulled off the road and scampered down along the river bank to get this sloppy hand held waterfall shot.

The gang over at the National weather Service is suggesting we should see more sunshine and even warmer temperatures before the showers of Miss Spring return in the middle of the week. So you know what to do; soak it up my friends, soak it up.

Spring Rain Washes Away the Flowers

Those beautiful flowers are now fluttering in the breeze as the rain has returned and brought with it wind and much needed water. The next few days will see clouds and periods of heavy showers. The NWS is being a bit optimistic with their temperature prediction today's 56 ain't gonna happen it only hit 48 on the old dial today. There is no light at the end of this tunnel... yet. Patience young Padawan, it will come. In the mean time do your best Gene Kelly impersonation and sing in the rain.

Winter is losing its Grip, Spring is in the Air

Yet another fabulous day with El Sol shining proudly in the sky is beginning to materialize. Yesterday, I actually pulled out the trusty lawnmower after its four month slumber in the garage. Winter is losing its grip on us and Spring is truly in the air. That said, old man winter may still get a few swipes in before he gives way to flowers, warm sunshine, and gentle showers.

I have seen snow fall in April, mind you it doesn't stick around but for a few minutes or maybe an hour. But the chill of winter can reach even into the month of May at times. This year has been a strange one however. We had substantially more than average snowfall down near sea-level, but the might Cascade mountains are running quite low on snow. Even today a glance up at the foothills shows nary a sign of the white wintry scenes and only the tippy-top of Silver Star has any snow at all. That is quite unusual indeed.

Maybe we will have an early spring after all? While we wonder about the plight of the near future, I say get out and enjoy this delicious weather; you know... soak it up, my friends, soak it up.

A Return to Unsettled Weather

So it begins, our late summer slide into the Autumn. The mistress of heat has played what was perhaps her final hand. The heat wave is over and we have a return to unsettled weather. Thunder and lightning awaited us this morning and the prognosticators of the atmosphere have proclaimed this shall continue through the middle of the week. The forecast is not bad, just a thump and bump and some showers to share till the end of the week when the 80s make a brief return. Soak it up my friends, soak it up :)
